 | 19th Nov 2006 | The 38's

Of the 30 built, 4 survive in varying conditions. The Alpha, 3801, is currently undergoing a major overhaul (including a brand new replacement boiler) at the New South Wales Rail Transport Museum. Sister 3820 also resides at the museum, abiet quietly waiting for restoration. The surviving Cardiff built locomotive, 3813 is stored in a disassembled at the Dorrigo Steam Railway & Museum whilst the Omega of the tribe, 3830 is also preserved in an operation condition by the Powerhouse Museum.

 | 13th Aug 2005 | 1210 & 3016
Locomotive 1210 (4-4-0) is Australia's oldest operating standard gauge steam locomotive. Built in 1878 by Beyer Peacock as an Express Passenger locomotive, 1210 had the honour of hauling the first train to the site of the nations capital, Canberra, in 1914. As such, when she officially retired from service with the NSWGR, she was presented to the City of Canberra and from 1962 til 1983, she was displayed on a plinth outside Canberra Railway Station. A custody arrangement was reached in that year between the government and the ARHS ACT to have the engine removed and restored to service. In 1988, following a complete restoration she returned to traffic as the flagship locomotive for the ARHS, a role she still carries today.
Locomotive 3016 (4-6-0) was built by Beyer Peacock and Co. in 1903 as a suburban tank locomotive for the NSWGR. As electrification spread in Sydney, the need for such engines became redundant the 3016 was rebuilt into a tender engine and sent to work country branches. 3016 holds the distinction of being the most traveled 30 class locomotive, steaming just over 3 million kilometres before retirement. Upon retirement, the loco was donated to a Sydney Rotary Club before being purchased by the ARHS ACT in 1973. It was completely restored over a period of 3 years in the mid to late 80s and was the Society's main steam motive power for much of the 1990's. Following a period under overhaul at the RTM in Thirlmere, 3016 has once again taken on this role.
